Lake Wamala is a small freshwater Lake within Central Uganda and it is positioned close to Mamba, Buzibadzi and Mpongo. This spectacular water lake is surrounded by Mubende, Gomba, Mpigi and Mityana districts. From Mityana Town, Kalyankoko and Kimuli, this lake is about 17kms drive away.
There are numerous rivers which pour their water into Lake Wamala and they include River Kitenga, River Mpamujugu, River Kabasuma, River Nyanzi and River Bimbye. It is drained by River Kibimba into River Katonga that also empties its water into Lake Victoria. River Kibimba is a seasonal river and usually its course remains dry. It occupies an area of about 250sq.kms and sits at elevation of about 1290m.
Lake Wamala features a number of scattered islands which also host variety of avifaunal species and others are utilized for cultural functions. History of Lake Wamala

Myth has it that this lake takes its name from King Wamala-the last monarch of the Bachwezi dynasty who lived the areas of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom. King Wamala was believed to have disappeared into Lake Wamala around Lubajja fishing site known as Nakyegalika which Kabakas of Buganda go to perform rituals as a way to appease spirits and his spirit lives in the lake.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, Lake Wamala served as a significant source of fresh and smoked fish which was sold locally and in the big towns in Central Uganda. However, fish got depleted due to mismanagement and no regulation.
Floral and faunal species in the Lake
Lake Wamala is surrounded unique vegetation and largely composed of papyrus, water based vegetation and floaters. The tree species to sight around this water body include palms and Raphia. The faunal species for you to expect to sight on Uganda safari here include hippos, wild pigs, antelope families such as waterbucks, sitatunga; primates like vervet monkeys, baboons. The lake also has incredible fish species including catfish, lung fish and tilapia.
